Xi Jinping Meets with State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar

On May 16, 2017, President Xi Jinping met at the Great Hall of the People with State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar, who was visiting China to attend the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation (BRF).

Xi Jinping points out that China and Myanmar enjoy time-honored "Paukphaw" friendship and extensive common strategic interests. President U Htin Kyaw paid a successful visit to China last month. The two sides have reached important consensus on deepening bilateral comprehensive strategic cooperation in the new period. China is willing to work with Myanmar to inherit the past and open up the future, stride forward, carry forward traditional friendship and enhance mutually beneficial cooperation, so as to push for continuous development of China-Myanmar relations.

Xi Jinping emphasized that both sides should maintain high-level exchanges and enhance strategic communication. Both sides should expand practical cooperation, promote the successful implementation of major cooperation projects, and push the cooperation in the construction of Economic Corridors, infrastructure, economic cooperation zones and other fields. Both sides should also expand non-governmental exchanges, implement the bilateral cooperative consensus in people's livelihood, people-to-people and cultural engagement and other fields, and further promote the cooperation in tourism, culture, media exchange, so as to consolidate the public opinion support of China-Myanmar friendship. China is willing to continue to provide the national peace process in Myanmar with necessary assistance, and both sides should make joint efforts to safeguard the security and stability in border areas between China and Myanmar. China is willing to enhance the cooperation with Myanmar under the "Belt and Road" initiative and realize common development, which will bring more tangible benefits to two peoples.

Aung San Suu Kyi congratulated on the success and fruitful outcomes of the BRF, saying that the "Belt and Road" initiative will bring peace, reconciliation, and prosperity to the region and the world. Myanmar attaches great importance and is devoted to deepening the China-Myanmar relations. Appreciating China's support and assistance, Myanmar stands ready to maintain closer exchanges between two governments and two political parties and enhance the mutual trust and the "Paukphaw" friendship as well as cooperation in economy and trade, agriculture, infrastructure and other fields. Myanmar is willing to make joint efforts with China to safeguard the peace and stability in border areas.
