Chinese Enterprises Grant Scholarships to Ugandan Students

Chinese enterprises in Uganda on Saturday awarded full scholarships to three financially disadvantaged students to pursue their secondary education.

Zheng Biao, representative of the China Enterprises Chamber of Commerce in Uganda, said the four scholarships by Mirembe Villas-Guoji Group(U) Limited, a housing enterprise, are part of the Chinese enterprises' dedication to fulfilling social responsibility by funding financially disadvantaged but academically excelling students.

This sponsorship brings to a total of 155 Chinese enterprises scholarships at Luyanzi College in central Uganda in less than five years.

"I am happy our members (enterprises) play an active role in fulfilling their social responsibility in Uganda. We believe students are the future and development of this country," said Zheng.

"We are looking for more cooperation between the Chinese enterprises, Ugandan local community and institutions like Luyanzi," he said.

Shen Jie, Managing Director of Mirembe Villas, said the four-year sponsorship is part of the company's long term cooperation and scholarship program to help disadvantaged students who can not manage to raise school fees to attain quality education.

"We have very many Chinese that are passionate to help the local people, especially in education sector. We believe through education students can get a brighter future and develop this country," said Shen.

Zhao Xiufen, economic and commercial counsellor of the Chinese Embassy in Uganda, said the scholarships will contribute to the economic and human resource development in the East African country.
